Video Game Reviews of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Customer Review: Go Deep & Go Hard
Summary: 3 Stars

They both end at a bridge. They both have you alternating missions between different factions. They both have you killing a hell of a lot of terrorists with automatic weapons. Beyond that though, there's not much in common between Call of Duty 4 on consoles/PC and it's handheld little brother on the DS.

"Dang it, I didn't double tap." What is the most common phrase you'll use while playing this game? Double-tapping the screen brings up the sights on your weapon, but all too often after double-tapping, you'll tap again to aim and it'll go back to the crosshairs; or you'll just want to turn and end up double-tapping into the sights. It's an annoying enough occurrence while simply playing the game, but a downright pain when being shot at.

That's not the game's only fault, just the biggest. Unlike on it's big brother, the enemies take way too many bullets to kill. Factor in the complete inaccuracy of the crosshairs, you'll spend all you're time trying to get headshots while aiming down the sights. Well not that much different than the console/PC iteration, the extra time it takes to get into the sights and aim makes dieing a very real possibility when faced with multiple enemies, especially if they're on either side of the screen. Some sections of the game seem to feature multiple deaths and considering the game's not very portable, this poses a problem. As a handheld game, it should feature short levels and multiple checkpoints to save at. The levels aren't terribly long, but since you can't save anywhere or even at checkpoints, you'll have to play a level in one sitting or start over. I had the DS in sleep mode for the past week to finish this game.

Being a DS game, it wouldn't be complete without some completely useless touch-screen based mini-games for things that don't need it. You know how on the console/PC, when you want to place a charge you just walk up to where you place it and press the action button? Not on this version. Instead, you must make an electrical current match up to various points by rotating tiles so the electricity flows to all the ends. I now feel completely prepared to dis-arm a bomb if need be because of this game. Apparently bomb defusal is as simple as tracing the wires from one end to the other. Who knew?

Not all is bad though. Despite the combat being very repetitive and slow, I really found myself enjoying playing through most of the game. The C-130 mission in particular was a blast to play through on the DS, if not a little hard to tell you're soldiers from the enemies.

Not surprisingly, IGN gave the sound the best score for this game. n-Space did a fantastic job with the audio, but Nintendo failed with the speakers. When played through headphones, there is so much more sound there. Not only do the guns and explosions sound more realistic, but you can actually hear you're character breathing hard after running and after being shot. I know with headphones on everything is going to sound better, but it's like two completely different games and headphones go a long way to making the experience more enjoyable.

I don't think anybody expected this game to live up to it's big brother. It does a good job of holding it's own and being a fun game on the DS, just not one I'd pick & play anytime soon. This game was made because it was a Call of Duty 4 tie-in, but I think it would've gotten more attention as a new franchise. Out the gate, most people had to be skeptical of a DS version of CoD4. Whereas if this had been an original game, people would've been more excited to see another FPS on DS. Wi-Fi wouldn't hurt either. I will say from what I played of Brothers in Arms DS & this, this was a better game.
