Video Game Reviews of Chronicles of Mystery: Curse of the Ancient TempleCustomer Review: "The wrong people must not get their hands on the chest"--Professor Olivier Bouchard Summary: 4 StarsIt's been a while since I enjoyed a Nintendo DS game as much as this. It is actually a short game story-wise with very easy mini games but there are so many extras that the re-play value is way up and that pushes the grade up, in my opinion. Here is my breakdown of Chronicles of Mystery: Curse of the Ancient Temple.
Story: You are Sylvie Leroux, an archeology student. You have been sent on an important and dangerous mission by your professor Olivier Bouchard. At an excavation site, the professor has come across a 16th century stone carving that is drawing much more attention than usual. In fact, there is a group that belongs to the Knights Hospitaller who want to get control of the ancient object Bouchard is about to uncover. This object holds a power that could destroy all sinners (in the Knights world, it appears "sinners" mean anyone not in their sect). Leroux must find clues to find the professor and stop the Knights from unleashing this destructive force.
Gameplay: As Leroux makes her travels, she must find certain objects, uncover inscriptions, and solves puzzles. Finding objects is easy because the things she needs are listed on the screen. Some of these objects will go into her inventory which will be used to solve puzzles. Other things are not used but I guess give her more things to find in each level. Some actions will open a mini game. These are easy, too. My favorites are the ones where you rotate boxes to create patterns and the one where you connect pieces of pipe. The rub-off games are a pain though because, even when the inscriptions is completely visible, it sometimes doesn't trigger the game and the time limit expires. Still, a lot of the games prove to be no challenge at all, like the one where you click the pieces of stained glass that are the same color. Completing these games will open up minigames to play outside the story. There are also scrolls to be found which do not progress the story, but opens Hidden World games you can play outside the story. They are rooms from the story that have all sorts of little objects in them and you have to find everything on the list within a time limit. I almost always get stuck on one object. The scrolls just offer excerpts on the history of the Knights Hospitaller which most players will probably not even read. Traveling is no problem, either. Your character just freely moves from place to place on a map with no one trying to stop her. I found that aspect a bit humorous.
Graphics and Music: Graphically, it is very good with lots of details. The places you visit are usually rooms with lots of objects or areas with ruins like the cemetery and the catacombs. If you like those kinds of images, you will like this game. The music is nice too. It is repetitive like most DS games, but not in an annoying way. The music also compliments the scene and activity. There are also realistic sound effects like when your character fills a tank with petrol. There is no action in this game, though. The scenes are stationary. The people do not move either, though they do change their expressions. Even the cut scenes are just still images.
Conclusion: The ending was a bit disappointing to me because you don't take the ultimate action. You watch still scenes as they show the action being taken. Actually seeing movement and seeing your character move as you control her to complete the task that will save the world would have been a nice touch and made the ending more exciting. Still, this game kept me coming back. The reason is for the extras. There is a point system and awards to earn when completing the story. You can win an award for such accomplishments as completing a level in less than a minute or finding all the scrolls (I'm on my fourth go-around trying to get all those darn scrolls!). They also give awards for playing poorly, like using up all the time limit or clicking the Hint button too many times (the latter is called the "Charm for Lazybones"). On "Normal" playing mode, you earn points when you complete levels so you can try to beat your score. You also win awards playing the Hidden World games. The awards are trophy images. OK, some players may not be motivated by images of trophies, but I'm determined to earn that "Great Chronicle" (finding all scrolls) award, so I'm starting the story for the fourth time. The game is easy and short, but it is nice to play a game that is not so complicated you need to refer to a walkthrough. I think the "Curse of the Ancient Temple" will be surprisingly fun for a lot of players. I recommend it.
