Video Game Reviews of Hotel Dusk: Room 215

Customer Review: You got your book in my DS game
Summary: 4 Stars

Hey. I like games, and I like books. Can't say I'm a big fan of games that are interactive mystery novels... but it's not too shabby of a genre for the DS. This is my first DS game and it's a nice choice for getting acquainted to how the DS works.

The game is decent so far. Me thinks I'm halfway through it. The plot is starting to shape up, the characters are starting to build suspicious habits and the hotel appears to be oddly paranormal. It's a good recipe for those that like mysteries. I really hope it ends well.

Again, I haven't finished the game so take my review with a grain of salt. Thus far, it is a good DS game.

Customer Review: Unique, entertaining, and challenging
Summary: 4 Stars

Hotel Dusk: Room 215 is a unique game for the Nintendo DS that presents itself as an interactive graphic novel. Cast as disgraced police officer Kyle Hyde, you find yourself in a hotel with a shady past and where every visitor has a secret. One by one you'll unravel the secrets of those around you, all the while getting closer to Kyle Hyde's own demons.

In terms of presentation and gameplay, Hotel Dusk is near perfect. The graphics are simple but effective, using a constantly moving pencil-sketch style of art that sets the tone for the characters and the story. You'll use the DS in a number of different ways, tilting it, using the touch screen, and even opening and closing it at parts in order to solve the game's many puzzles. The story is very linear, but provides enough problem-solving to make you feel as though you're the one advancing the plot. The writing and plot development are top-notch, making the game immensely entertaining even if viewed as more of a novel than a game.

The one knock against Hotel Dusk is that the game provides little in the way of clues for some of the puzzles you'll need to solve in order to advance the story. This is not as big a problem as it would have been in the years before walkthroughs became easily available online, but it can get frustrating if you want to do things without any help. There will be times in the game where you'll just get stuck not because you aren't smart enough to finish, but because the game itself provides no clues on a crucial puzzle. Fortunately, there are only a few such pitfalls during gameplay. Overall, Hotel Dusk: Room 215 provides a terrific puzzle-solving experience and a film noir story that is entertaining on almost every level.

Customer Review: Finally
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been waiting for this game for a long time. When I saw it at a local store for $19, I whispered to my husband it's what wanted for Christmas.

I finished the game in a couple of weeks.

Some people are turned off because it's not a fast-paced action game. I can certainly understand this position, but this game is more of an interactive graphic novel than anything else. Once people understand that, maybe they could enjoy it a bit more.

I found the game quite refreshing in its presentation. The graphics were beautiful and the story was well-told. If cing were to come out with another installment of this or made similarly-styled games, I'd wouldn't hesitate in adding them to my collection.

Good job, cing! Thank you for such a beautiful, refreshing game.

Customer Review: Not so great
Summary: 3 Stars

This is a slow moving, boring game. It isn't very challenging or entertaining. I can't get past the check-in screen because it takes too much time and is so boring.

Customer Review: A hidden gem
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this game after reading reviews from other people on Amazon and have to say I was thoroughly pleased. You may remember the choose your own adventure books that were popular years ago, this is the same concept and just as much fun. I'd recommend it for anyone who's looking for something a little different from the typical platformers that are so popular on the DS right now.
