Video Game Reviews of Nintendo DS Mario Kart BundleCustomer Review: Great product marred by over-simplicity. Summary: 4 Stars
The Nintendo DS has been out for awhile now, and with the rather recent addition of online play the question many people ask seems to be "is it worth it?"
For the gamer at heart it's a rather solid "yes." The Nintendo DS lacks several features(that some would call gimmicks) the PSP(Sony's own portable and direct competitor) has, but manages to hold it's own thanks to high quality games.
The DS at this time lacks an internet browser (which is on it's way to DS's in Japan-for a price and use of a cartridge slot) and the ability to play mp3's, view pictures, movies, in addition to any sort of data storage.
The games available right now are limited (many are still in development) but several quality titles like Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Meteos, Nintendogs, Advance War, and Sonic Rush can keep many gamers happy for a long time. Metroid Prime Hunters (from the demo) is shaping up to be a high quality shooter-esque game, and the touch screen is an absolute godsend for FPS fans.
The included game: Mario Kart DS is the best game out on any handheld right now (in my opinion). I wasn't much of a fan of Double Dash on the Gamecube but this manages to get rid of that awful "catch-up" from the N64 version, includes tons of classic maps from all the other MK games plus many original, and has awesome gameplay modes available.
Unfortunately...the execution was lukewarm for online play. Online you can only play Versus with up to 3 other players. That means only 4 players on a course racing, which isn't initially bad itself. It's just huge shame that the Battle mode (which supports around 8 players or bots) was left out. A few more battle courses would have been really great, as it's my preferred mode of play.
Adding to that the online setup, which some would call "easily accessible" others would call "overly simple." It was obviously designed so Johnny-2-IQ could get an online game going with no hassle, but in doing so forget having ANY options. You can't create your own room and await players, you can't use a server browser to pick and choose, nothing. It picks a couple random players, throws them together, lets everyone pick a course, chooses one seemingly at random (the game) and there you go.
The other huge issue I have is that getting online can be a hassle in itself. It has no problem with my home setup, but try using t-mobile's free service at hotspots, or a local best-buys, or geek squads and it won't work. It doesn't matter where you are, or what settings you have, multiple people I know have tried them all and none of the 3 work with the DS. But the PSP and laptops have no trouble getting online with any of them.
So there you have it, the DS is a great system with lots of potential. It needs a revamped online setup but the games are superb by all accounts. If you can play without going "OH MY GOD IT"S FOR KIDDIES THIS SUCK" mentality that many seem to have you'll find it's more than capable of meeting your gaming needs.
PROS:
Great games
Touch screen is phenomenal
Excellent battery life
Plays Gameboy/Color/Advance games
CONS:
Shallow and discombobulated online setup
No multiplayer for Gameboy/Color/Advance games
Not the slickest looking thing out there (enter: DS Lite)
Not too many "gimmicks"
Graphically inferior to PSP
