Video Game Reviews of Nintendo DSi Matte - Blue

Customer Review: Entering DSi
Summary: 4 Stars

When it does come down to video games, Nintendo has shown to be more at the top of its game this past year than Sony and Microsoft have shown combined. But that has also been to the extremes in its handheld DS as well. For the past 5 years, the Nintendo DS has taken over the portable handheld game system market by storm, and shows that Nintendo has made its joy to gamers young and old alike, and doesn't show any sign of stopping soon. When Nintendo launched the DS Lite, they also changed the scope of the system by making it lighter, but keeping the gameplay the same as was before when the DS launched in 2004. Now, Nintendo is set to make the DS go to the next generation, with music, photos, and gameplay of new kinds of audiences.

The new Nintendo DSi, is the latest incarnation to Nintendo's DS handheld empire and shows a delivering appeal to young and old gamers alike. It expands what made the hard core system had delivered for the past 5 years, and takes it to new snapshots and gamers delights' of all kinds. The device is sleeker than the original DS, and DS Lite alone, and includes a lot of new great features here, including the ability to download new video games, surf the internet on the go, playback music, take photos wherever you please with a delightful digital camera. It has a lot of great features here that work very well, and make it more convient for DS owners. Not only can you play nearly all your favorite DS games, you can now have improved features here like a shorter recharging time than the DS Lite, and you can also have a long battery too that works just as well. Nintendo also shows that it has expanded the system and borrows some of its features from the success of the Wii, into not just a easy to use main menu that works nicely with a simple touch of the DS stylus, but with new features here too.

The added features here are also nice including the new Nintendo DSi Shop, where just like the Wii Shop Channel for the Wii, you can download new exclusive and great games exclusively for the DSi including new versions of Wario Ware, and a new Brain Age Express: Math, a new smaller version of the wildly-addictive puzzle game, that not only is adjusted to math, but brings in a loads of fun. Another new game called Birds & Beans brings in a classic gameplay action, where you can stretch a tongue by collecting beans falling from the sky. Using the DS stylus, the harder the bean to catch, the more points you can score.

The digital camera is also a huge bonus here. The new extension here is the replacement for the retired Game Boy Advanced slot from the previous DS systems. You can take great photos of all kinds, and store them on a simple SD card, on in the DSi's internal memory. The camera is a great treat for gamers and those who've never owned a digital camera before either. You can take loads of great pictures here, and change the background and photo itself too, whether you can alter the image of the pictures' color or distorting the image of the photo, and making the photo have a mirror-image too.

Yet, with all of the great features here, there actually are a couple of casualties on the new Nintendo DSi that might come as a surprise for the eyes, and the snaphots. The first big disadvantage is the fact that the Game Boy Advanced Slot has been removed here. While it does show that Nintendo has moved on from its GBA days, it does leave a few DS casualties here itself as well. It also is a disadvantage for DS gamers from before too. Not only can you not be able to play GBA games, but you also will not be able to use some DS accessories that worked from that same GBA slot too. If you have the DS Rumble Pak, you won't be able to use it with games compatable with the device like Metroid Prime Pinball and recent DS games like Moon and Need For Speed: Undercover. Not only that, but if you own either of the Guitar Hero: On tour titles, you also won't be able to play them on the DSi either, because the guitar accessory that came with the game, that plugged in the GBA slot on the previous DS systems, is a big casualty on this system.

The second disadvantage is the music playback here. While I love the idea that you actually can record classic phrases and music snippets here, they are in the lesser-known AAC format. The music playback is sadly also in the lesser-known format. Unlike Sony's PSP, where you can playback music in the more popular MP3 and Windows Media formats, it is a tougher sell here. But hopefully, Nintendo could make the music playback fit down the road to suit those MP3 music needs.

All in all, despite those few faults, the new Nintendo DSi is still a great delight, and expands beautifully for those hard core gamers young and old alike who want more for their DS needs. I really love the new system, and I think it is a great buy for all your new gaming needs. If you still have the earlier Nintendo DS system, you'll definitely want to take a great picture of this into your mind, as a delightful joy and a great deal of fun for all your favorites' in gaming.

Modern handheld gaming has long been dominated by Nintendo and Sony. Each hardware manufacturer has multiple viable offerings derived either directly, or evolving from the respective DS and PlayStation Portable product lines. All of these devices are impressive multifunctional devices, with designs meant to encourage gameplay on the go, integration with the Internet, backwards compatibility to previous games, and so on, but each goes about this in different ways. Taking a few minutes to examine the main features, and getting more familiar with available options, accessories and possible limitations of each handheld is the optimal way to determine which is the best choice for a player.
