Customer Review: Addictive Mini-Games From Japan

Rhythm Heaven is actually the English release of the original Japanese game Rhythm Tengoku (the sequel was called Rhythm Tengoku Gold in Japan). It is essentially a collection of music-based mini games that require users to perform some action in time with a given rhythm. Although the premise is simple, the games are surprisingly addictive and require some practice to complete successfully. The only problem I found is that stylus motions/timing demanded in some of the games is so precise that the game registers errors even when it feels like you're doing the task correctly. Fortunately, if you find yourself failing at a certain mini-game for an overly long amount of time, the program lets you advance to the next and then go back and work on the problematic one later.
Unlike the original Rhythm Tengoku, the mini-games in Rhythm Heaven / Rhythm Tengoku Gold do not generally feel particularly Japanese. Examples include building robots, constructing factory bolts, and shooting down space enemies. In contrast, although Rhythm Tengoku had its share of random games, other more 'Japanese' cultural ones included a samurai slaying ghouls, girls in yukata dancing at an obon festival, and practice writing several katakana and kanji characters.
All in all, it's a good game to pick up, put down, and play in bits and pieces in your spare time (for examples, waiting in an airport for a flight). There's enough variety to hold users interest for awhile even though some of the mini-games are rather repetitive.
