Video Game Reviews of Rhythm Heaven

Customer Review: I'm in Heaven!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my 4th game I got for my DSi, and after playing it for only a few minutes, it immediately shot up to my #1 favorite!! I'm 29 years old, and I have an extensive background in music and theory. This game provided ultimate entertainment for me. The music is catchy and fun, and the gameplay is addictive. You really do have to rely on your 'inner beat' to beat some of the mini games, but I found this just challenging enough that I keep coming back for more.

After you beat each mini game, another one is unlocked. You can earn trophies to play other mini games, and every once in a while it will challenge you to get a "perfect" on a level you already passed. It really keeps the game exciting! I highly recommend this game!

Customer Review: Frustrating if all you have to play on is the old DS (phat)
Summary: 3 Stars

Try playing this game on the original DS, and you will soon find clearing some stages is near impossible - leaving you ready to curse and throw the DS across the room (at least in my case). The "flick" movement necessary to perform tasks in the game constantly does not register. Since there is a very small window of mistakes allowed between passing and failing a stage, even one or two unregistered flicks messes you up. It seems playing on the DSi is the way to go, but I don't have the DSi. It would have been helpful if the manufacturer put out a notice saying the game might not perform the same across all DS systems.

What I liked: The characters and music are fun! Not annoying at all.
What could be improved: There really wasn't much escalation in terms of level of difficulty the further you progressed in the game. They just changed characters + music, and gave a different rhythm, but didn't make it harder/faster like in other rhythm games such as Elite Beat Agents. This made it not as fun for me as it got a bit redundant.
Helpful info: Play a game at least three times and if you haven't cleared the stage, you can talk to the bartender and he will let you move on to the next stage. This is the only way I got to see the different stages given my problems with the flick on the old DS.

This game might be fun if you have a DSi, but even if it worked perfectly, there are better rhythm games out there in my opinion.

Customer Review: Awesome Game!
Summary: 5 Stars

I really like this game even though it's hard. you do a good job on one level and end up just getting OK... well that's because you have to get the rhythm right also. I admit, it does get annoying after playing the same level for five times just to get a superb, but the music is catchy and it's a whole lot of fun! The only bad thing about it would have to be getting the perfects... most of these little mini games are way to hard to get a perfect on, but it is possible.

Customer Review: Family Fun
Summary: 4 Stars

This game is awesome!! After going through countless games, this one made my cut! From the moment I put it in my DS I knew I would enjoy playing it. The games are fun and short, the graphics are hilarious (I keep thinking of the dude eating dumplings; when you miss and hit him in the head...) and the music is also fun and upbeat. Iv'e even got my husband on Rhythm Heaven, the only game he will play with me! We alternate back and forth; it is actually really fun! It gets frusterating though...some levels [remixes] you think you are doing soo good and at the end it tells you to try again. Like really some mini games get hard, especially when they throw them all together. But once you go through them a couple of times you get the hang of it. When we pick this game up, my husband and I are locked into it...we scream, yell, even run around the house! It is a lot of fun but I have been tempted to throw my DS a couple of times...it gets intense!

Customer Review: Really Challenging, Lots of Ways to Stay Playing
Summary: 5 Stars

This is such a great game. I really like it because it is so unique to the gaming arena. The entire game is based on listening carefully to the rhythms of the music. I don't know anything about music so I can't tell you whether you need to do things on a full beat, half beat or off beat but I do know that it is difficult to get the timing perfect.

Each level has a style of rhythm and a corresponding visual. It is your job to tap or "flick" on the screen after the appropriate cues based on the rhythm of the music. The better you do at matching the cues, the more you can advance.

The visuals are good but sometimes it actually helps to just look away and respond based on the sound alone. That way you aren't looking at (and reacting too slowing) at the visual clues.

The tunes are catchy and fun, some get into your head and don't get out.

There is a large variety of levels and styles. Some can be mastered easily and others seem to really trip me up.

There are times that if you can't advance after trying for awhile, the "coffee barista" at the "coffee shop" link will allow you to move forward anyway.

Each level has three ways of improving: getting through with an OK (it allows for a few mistakes); getting a medal (a perfect run) and getting a perfect when prompted. If you get a perfect when prompted, it gives you bonuses in the "coffee shop" - music, little stories, etc.

I have really enjoyed playing this and the only drawback is that you need to either wear headphones or do it where the music will not bother others. Since it is so repetitious, it will be annoying to others if you play it next to them for awhile.

Lastly, my 5 year old has fun playing but it is very difficult for her. My avid video playing 10 year old is only slightly better. I think it is really hard for a child to get the timing as perfect as the game requires.
