Video Game Reviews of Rhythm Heaven

Customer Review: Rhythm Hell
Summary: 2 Stars

I'd like to think that I'm good with timing and rhythms. I can play DDR proficiently on Standard mode, Guitar Hero on Hard mode, and I've played other similar games with no problem. Then there's Rhythm Heaven. While most of the minigames successfully integrate rhythm, there are other minigames that seem to have no rhythm whatsoever, such as the minigame that has you photographing race cars just as they pass by. For others, I can get the rhythm, but when you put it in, the game fails to recognize it, such as with the Moai singing minigame.

It's insulting every single time I get a game over screen when I only miss a few. It pours salt on the wounds when the game actually insults you back in words that make you feel useless. Take that with the fact that the minigame practices don't even compare with the real thing, and you have one great self-esteem destroying machine.

Customer Review: Not as good as I expected
Summary: 3 Stars

I ordered Rhythm Heaven because I heard so many positive things about it. The mini games were supposedly fun and the tunes charming. I can't say I feel that enthusiastic about it. It's not a bad game by any means, I just don't find it as much fun as Elite Beat Agents and its kooky charm isn't as addicting as Wario Ware was for me.

Using the stylus to tap and flick in time to the music seemed harder to me than tapping the numbered buttons in Elite Beat Agents because of the lack of visual cues. You have to rely on your ears and sense of timing. I had a lot of trouble in the ping pong game where you flick tje stylus to return a serve. The regular and slow balls were easy but I can't hit the fast ones no matter how much I practice.

I'd recommend that you try it out first before buying especially if you have slow reflexes or a less than perfect sense of rhythm. Otherwise, you may find yourself a little disappointed.

Customer Review: Flick The Heavens!
Summary: 4 Stars

Not jumping around the bush, "Rhythm Heaven" is a lot of fun. It might be because I have a fascination with quirky music titles, but I find solace in the simplicity and audibility of the game. Not to mention it's quite an addicting game, once I get into the groove, I can't stop hitting the right notes.

"Rhythm Heaven" is a vertically-viewed, touchscreen-centric game where gamers have to tap, flick, and slide their way across 50 levels. I would like to go into greater detail, but that's all there is to it, just a lot of stylus control (and the shoulder buttons for that one level). However, I can say this: flicking is a tricky form of art. The game says it's like flicking a paper football with your fingers, but stick-flicking through that unorthodox example tends to hit the edge of the touchscreen, not to mention some levels have me flicking hastily. It took some time to get the feel of the flick, but once I got the method down (which is pressing the screen before flicking), it became satisfying to go through these rhythmic challenges.

The majority of the 50 levels, a quarter of which are just harder versions of existing ones, are varied enough to take advantage of touchscreen without being repetitive; the levels themselves are creative and catchy. My favorite is the "Glee Club" stage; it may be the easiest level of the game, but I love the tune and there's something pleasant in tapping to yap an adorable bobble head in front of an afro conductor. The "Karate Man" and "Rockers" levels are awesome in that they're both challenging yet easy to get into the groove; Even the girly ones are fun, like the "Fan Club" and "Love Lab" stages. The levels themselves are pretty short, and the game itself isn't that long even if one tries to perfect all the stages (which isn't easy), but I wouldn't have it any other way; besides, it has a few bonus mini-games that took plenty of my time.

I have nothing to comment about the inconsistent score system, because I rarely encounter this problem during my entire playthrough; either I was the rhythm master or most likely because I retried some of the levels before I was given a grade. I will sympathize with other reviewers with this issue: this game is strict! "Rhythm Heaven" may be a pick-up-and-play game, but you better pick up some timing and play with precision if you want to get through with this game with ease, because the tutorials alone won't guarantee you'll succeed. Some of levels are pretty unfair, like the "Moai Doo-Wop" stage where in some patterns it couldn't tell if I was flicking or tapping; "Rhythm Rally" is considered the flick stage of hell, and it is. The game relies of following the beats, but a few of the harder levels either shifts or takes away the beat halfway into the stage, so not only did I have to prepare for off-beat responses but I had to memorize the beats to maintain flow. Although, I actually prefer this level of difficult, or else the game will be too much of a breeze.

For all the prolonged shooters, complex fighting games, and lengthy RPGs, it's always good to play a game that doesn't take too much time yet provide plenty of instant gratification. "Rhythm Heaven" is that type of game, one that dances with wacky charm. Now excuse me while I try this cowbell mini-game to see how long I can keep tapping before my arm falls out.

Customer Review: Tons O' Fun!
Summary: 4 Stars

I just received this game yesterday....sat down at 9:30 to give it a whirl, and the next time I looked up it was 11. So yeah...its fun...and addictive. It IS really challenging though! And sometimes the lack of direction can be confusing...but there is a practice mode before every game so you can hang out in there until you figure out what the heck is going on. But I would definitely recommend it to everyone! So fun!

Customer Review: Too hard!
Summary: 1 Stars

I spent hours and hours on this game trying to get past just the first level. But, I could never make it. It was just too frustrating!
