Customer Review: Nerf Armor Excellent Choice
Summary: 5 Stars
The Nerf Armor is excellent, and delivery was fast. Although it does about double the thickness of my DS, for me that's a good thing: It makes it easier to hold the DS comfortably in my (relatively small) adult hands. It's also very protective, which is good if you tend to drop things a lot. I will say that it doesn't provide much if any protection for the hinges when it's closed. But the other cases I've looked at either didn't either, or they covered the hinge with a loose piece of flexible material that I felt would stick out and bother me when the case was open. And when the DS is open for play, the case seems to cover not only the hinges, but also just about everything a case could cover and still give access to all the buttons and slots. And the fact that you don't remove the case to play (even the top half of the DS remains covered when open), means it's pretty much fully protected during play.
The case's own hard plastic hinge looks like it might help to keep your DS open if you had broken a hinge on your DS, but I can't be sure of that.
The Nerf material seems much more durable than I thought it would be. I expect it should last a long time, unless it's for a child or someone else who gives it a lot of very hard use - but then that may be true of any case.
Note, however, that you may not want this case if you plan to remove it occasionally: Although it's very easy to put on, it's quite difficult to remove. When I needed to remove the case to swap colors with my spouse's DS, I had trouble figuring out how to do it without damaging the case or the DS (no instructions come with it). But then I remembered reading removal instructions in another review here, and they worked well. It required patience, but in the end it really took me only a few minutes. (I did an Edit/Find for the word "remove" to find the review with the instructions again.) To give me clear access to the little tabs, I did this with the DS open the whole time, being careful not to open the lid wide enough to stress the DS's hinges. But I think next time I would try harder to do it with the lid closed, since this would put no stress on the DS's own hinges. I don't know whether or not it's possible to slide a thumbnail in to pull those tabs out with the lid closed. If not, be sure to try not to open the DS too wide, & not to accidently force the DS open hard enough to damage its hinges. I thank the reviewer who took the time to put the instructions here. I probably would have lost patience and damaged either the case or the DS if I hadn't had that help.
All that said, I would definitely buy the Nerf Armor again (since I don't plan to take it off). And if it ever wears out (I doubt it will for us), I hope it will still be available.
