Customer Review: MOSTLY VOCABULARY BUT GOOD DRILLS
Summary: 4 Stars

I've been using this game pretty much non-stop for the past 2-3 weeks. My vocabulary has expanded, and I am totally addicted.

Only a few caveats: (1) Once you get through the 41 (or so) lessons, it gives you random groups of 10 words to use. They are not necessarily connected, so it's harder to learn them. (2) The games are fun, but they get a little tedious, and it never gives you English and asks you to remember the Spanish, which is what you have to do in real Spanish communication. (3) The "lessons" don't ask you to do anything. They are just translations, and you can compare your own pronunciation to the Spanish speaker (which is cool). (4) There's no reading or writing and no pictures.

That said, it is an excellent review of vocabulary and I love how it groups the words in tens so the lessons are not overwhelming. I also love how it constantly brings back the "mastered" words so you don't forget them once you get enough points.

I would recommend this Spanish-learning game, but it could be better. I wish there were another Spanish-learning game for DS to compare it to.

Customer Review: Very good game
Summary: 4 Stars

I know some Spanish so I bought this game hoping it would help me with the thing I have the most problem with...memorizing vocabulary. It has helped me tremendously. I love that the lessons are very thorough in teaching you all kinds of words you would use in travel and in ordinary life. I also love that it maintains a list of words that you have "mastered" so that I can continue to go back and make sure that I haven't forgotten words from previous lessons and continue to quiz myself. The games are fun although I don't like the wac-a-mole game as much as flash cards and multiple coice which I think are better in helping with memorization.

All in all, a very good game.

Customer Review: An Excellent Learning Tool
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this game as a Freshman in college who had recently re-realized his Nintendo DS's potential. I was planning on taking Spanish in a few semesters so I reckoned this would be as good an opportunity as ever to learn a new language. I took Latin in high school and opted out of the overpopulated Spanish classes, even though my last name is Gonzales, and am now paying for it. Spanish is an exceptionally practical second language to display one's power over on a day-to-day basis as it continues to rise in popularity with the locals.

The game works at a pace which makes sense. You're not given a huge dictionary to memorize immediately, rather, the game gets you to "master" about ten words and their conjugations before moving on to more. These words are all complimentary and, with the way the game is structured, you'll be utilizing all the words you know to form sentences constantly in your daily life.

There are hundreds of lessons and the program stays fresh by giving you new and exciting minigame-tools to expand your mastery of the Spanish language. It's something I have yet to get bored of and I've been playing to every day for the last month or so with over a thousand words mastered!

Impressive, I know.

The bottomline here is that if you own a Nintendo DS and you want to learn a second language, or at least get more acquainted with some of the vocabulary, the "My _____ Coach" series is a wonderful tool for anyone +7 years of age. I think kids should at least have a handle on the English language as the game relies on it for a decent amount of examples in teaching sentence structure etc.

For it's charming style, ingenious format, and engaging presentation I give "My Spanish Coach" for the Nintendo DS a 5 out of 5.

Customer Review: disappointed
Summary: 2 Stars

I had taken some Spanish in high school and college, but it's been a few years since I had used it so I wanted something to help me relearn it. I've played through the first 55 lessons, and while it has been fun up to this point, the game has too many flaws:

First, it teaches some basic grammar, but that's it. Even most of the grammar it teaches, it doesn't bother going into some of the mechanics. For instance, it never explains the difference between ar, ir and er verbs. Some stem-changing and "go" verbs are introduced, but the game doesn't go over the conjugation rules. It never mentions how masculinity/femininity works. It only shows how to conjugate certain verbs in present tense and never goes over past tense, present perfect, conditional, reflexive verbs, etc. I also don't remember the game going over por vs para.

After lesson 40, there are no more grammar lessons. Instead, the lessons from then on are just random vocabulary words. There isn't even any theme; for example, the current lesson I'm on has the words angle, chimpanzee, distract, foothill, incarnate (along with 5 others) lumped together.

One last flaw I'd like to point out is that some words are mispronounced. For example, "ratio" sounds like she's saying "ratito". These pop up here and there and can be distracting.

The only reason that I've given this 2 stars instead of 1, is that it might be helpful for someone who is beginning to learn Spanish in a formal setting, and would like a fun supplement to go along with it. I do not recommend this for anyone that wants to extensively learn the language.
